Workshop Description pdf: Thinking Painting, Using Fusing

Roger Thomas is a world renowned glass artist whose techniques and style are instantly recognizable.  He is well known to students of glass for his varied and unusual fusing techniques with which he creates his art.  In this unique workshop students will challenge their preconceived notions about glass, color, and technique and learn to differentiate between the essential and the unnecessary.

Roger will share his experience and unique vision on techniques for designing and rendering his landscapes and abstractions in fused glass.  The purpose of this workshop is to help students cultivate their own voice and path in their artwork.  Students will benefit from group discussions and critiques as they each work to create original art pieces  Students will approach each project by developing skills to recreate details of an image and transform it into glass.  Projects will include a variety of sample tiles which are fired and worked on multiple times throughout the class. The student will also be making samples of different techniques for landscapes, each illustrating styles Roger uses in his own studio.  The final project will be focused on creating larger landscape piece using techniques they will develop during the class.

This is an ideal class for the accomplished fuser looking to expand into a more pictorial medium as well as the accomplished painter or draughtsman wishing to expand into fused glass. The prerequisites are either intermediate fusing skills or good painting skills combined with basic fusing experience.
