This course will introduce those with a working knowledge of glass fusing and forming to a more advanced methodology of flat casting using a 3D effect to display texture, imagery and pattern in, on and through their kiln glass projects.

Students will learn a variety of techniques including xerography, stenciling, painting using vitreous enamels, and dry powdered glass. Also, we will be using computer generated designs, photographs and text to enhance these design elements.  This process involves producing a library of designs that can be later used in construction of a finished piece.

Class Info pdf: Ins & Outs of Model & Mold Making for Kilnformed Glass

During this workshop students will concentrate on model making skills and mold making. For the model making we will work in clay and wax although the main focus will be wax. Students will make several models for different types of molds. The mold making portion of the workshop will cover reproduction molds and casting molds. The reproduction molds will cover latex, silicon, RTV rubber and plaster. The casting molds will cover open face, press, closed and multi-part. No glass will be cast in this workshop but students will take home the models, reproduction molds and casting molds that they make in the workshop. It is recommended that students bring small objects that they want to make reproduction molds of and also have ideas for pieces they want to make models of.

This class will explore color principles, theory and applications using Bullseye glass and kilnforming techniques.  The intent is to increase our understanding of color and how we can use it in our glass work to enhance the content and increase the beauty of the finished piece.

Conventional color theory, which is generally based on opaque or pigmented color, provides the departure point for our explorations in glass.  Glass obviously has many qualities that are much different than opaque or pigmented color so our goal is to understand color in terms of the qualities of glass such as transparency, translucency, light reflection and
refraction, and depth.

Class Info pdf:Extreme Controlled Landscapes – Miriam di Fiore Technique

Beginning with an image chosen by the instructor, the student will learn a variety of methods necessary to accomplish different effects within a “complex landscape” and to further “translate” the landscape image into glass. The instructor will demonstrate the advanced processes used in creating her pieces. Bullseye sheet glass and frit will be used in a layering process to create the landscape.   Vitrigraph stringers will be made, worked with a torch and used in the piece. The student will follow the process step by step to get the entire image translated into a flat glass piece with depth and an extremely realistic effect.  If there is time for a second project, the student will have a choice of images, portraits, figures, flowers, or objects, from photos provided by the instructor. Both projects should be complete by the end of the class.

In these fun, seasonal classes, students learn the basic skills of gathering glass from the furnace, applying color and introducing air into the piece to create a hollow bubble. This comprehensive casting workshop covers how to make your own molds to create kiln cast glass art.  An introduction to the art of making molds, topics covered are: materials and techniques used to cast glass in the kiln, what types of objects can be cast, billets, how to avoid an undercut, and the different processes involved. We will cover making a rubber mold, pouring wax, and wax manipulation, mixing plaster silica mould compound, using Castalot mold material, prepare for casting, color and types of glass used.  Coldworking techniques of the finished pieces will also be covered.

Class Info pdf: Exploring Elements of Design

This class will investigate fundamental principles of design that are common to all forms of art, design, architecture and craft, focusing on primary elements of two and three dimensional design, principles for ordering these elements, and transformation of the elements into a rich composition.

Students make a range of two-dimensional and heavy relief projects and leave with a solid footing in the concepts that will propel their work to the next level. These include systems of ordering and relationships (symmetry and asymmetry, hierarchy, rhythm and repetition, transformation, proportion and scale).  Design principles will be explored through presentations and discussions, drawing and painting exercises, sketch models and in kiln formed glass, relying primarily on a black and white palette. The emphasis will be on applying these design elements and principles to your kiln formed glass work. The intent is to understand the essential elements of design, how they can be manipulated, and their role in developing and enriching the artistic content in finished works.

2 Week Workshop - August 30 to Sept. 3, Sept. 5-9, 2011

For the first week of the workshop, students will be creating custom colored glass cane using china paints.  The cane will be fired and then cut and assembled into bands of color and patterns, similar to a mosaic technique, of various shapes and sizes. All work will be fused, cold worked, and slumped into an array of forms.  We will be experimenting with the use of various types of glass paint and enamels on different glass types in order to see what results can be achieved.

During the second week Gabriele will work with each student individually in the cold shop.  Time will be spent embellishing the surfaces of the slumped forms by developing skills using different surface treatments.  Typical Venetian-style treatments will include battuto, incise, and velato techniques.  Available cold-working equipment will include horizontal flat laps, wet belt sander, Spatzier lathe, and sandblaster.  Schedules for each student will be set so everyone gets to work on the equipment each day.  All students will continue creating, fusing, and slumping work throughout the second week.  There will be no down time.
