FORM: “Form is one of the seven elements of art. At its most basic, a form is a three-dimensional geometrical figure – in art, form is the whole of a piece’s visible elements and the way those elements are united. Form allows us as viewers to mentally capture the work, understand it and attempt to analyze it. Finally, form refers to the visible elements of a piece, independent of their meaning. – color, dimension, lines, mass, shape, etc., while the feelings the piece evokes are informal products of the viewer’s imagination…as distinguished from the material of which it is composed, giving it individuality and a distinctive character”.
The goal of this workshop is for each student to create individuality within each vessel. We will be experimenting with the visible elements of our forms in order to determine and understand the limitations of the deep vessel forms. Through the use of color, enhancements with linear and non-linear elements, the exploration of reactive glasses and materials, challenging the process by varying the thickness of the form, and introducing imagery via several processes – students will come out of the class with a a couple of deep vessel forms and a multitude of samples and experiments. The push will be for a more sculptural approach to your work and push your glass in a new direction rather than master a specific technique.
Students will learn finishing and cold working, and ultimately how to present the vessel form as a sculptural form – well thought out and presented. Throughout the workshop students will be encouraged to experiment thereby giving participants the confidence to expand on ideas once outside the classroom.
Each student will leave the workshop with 2 deep slump vessels (2 different set of molds), 1 drop vessel, and an array of sample tiles and experiments…..small class size (maximum 3) so we can personalize this class a little bit! It will be a full on and fun 7-day workshop.
