 The aim of this 7-day Master Class is to achieve a “sublime form”. The process is to discard the superfluous and to identify and develop a personal concept. The result will be a form that is the simple expression of a complex thought and students will be encouraged to adopt a sculptural approach to their work – a search for form and push their glass in a new direction rather than master a technique. In order to develop your aesthetic and conceptual perspective, while negotiating the technical challenges of deep-slumping into 3-step ceramic moulds, the beginning will be with pencil and paper, drawing from the immediate environmental stimuli surrounding The Glass Studio during a field-trip.

Students will challenge themselves further by designing a piece made up of only a single colour of Reactive Bullseye Glass sheet, either transparent or opalescent, with mark-making realized through the application of accessory glasses such as frits, powders, confetti and stringers. Students will learn finishing and cold working, and ultimately how to present the vessel form as sculpture. Discussions, power point presentations, and technical talks will encourage and enable students to expand their ideas once outside the classroom.

See Richard’s work on www.fusiostudio.com.  This workshop focuses on the intent and techniques that he uses for his “Mapping” work.

 Bas relief is found in the art and architecture of all cultures and has existed for thousands of years. It is a kind of carving or sculpture in which the figures are raised or depressed slightly from a flat background to give a three-dimensional effect. Subtle changes in the levels of the surface and the interplay of light and shadow on the planes enable us to see and appreciate the composition.

This class explores the rich possibilities of working in relief in kilnformed glass. Simple materials such as fiber paper are used to create complex forms, shapes and textures. Intricate surface relief, texture, color and light interactions are possible in “shallow space.” The workshop will include a brief survey of the use of relief in art and architecture throughout history. Sheet glass, frit and powder are the primary glass materials used. Coldworking techniques will be used to create additional textures and to finish the work. Numerous reference samples will be made in preparation for a comprehensive final project.

This five-day workshop explores advanced techniques for achieving subtle textural and colour variations with glass powders. The techniques include veining, subtle shading, replacement colours, working with light and dark colours, sandblasting for colour control, and preferred orientation in textures. New wafer techniques and a new crackle texture will also be introduced. Participants will work from sketches and develop skills to plan and create predictable finished pieces. Participants will also investigate ways to express their vision and voice using powders.

This is an intensive five-day workshop that explores new ways to approach glass design, composition, and the powder colour palette. The “colour” part involves understanding chemical reactions and blending powders to achieve a unique, reproducible colour palette. The “component” part involves producing and working with many forms of powder wafers. The “crackle” part involves learning how to create three different expressions of the crackle texture.

Pate de verre is an ancient glass casting technique using finely crushed glass packed into negative molds and kiln fired to create sculptural objects with subtle luminosity. The technique allows the artist to control color placement, shading and degree of translucency unique to this casting process.

This 5 day, hands-on class, class will introduce students to the many possibilities of working sculpturally using pate de verre. Students will also learn to use the lost wax technique to create original, full size, 3 dimensional sculptures or vessels to be cast into glass.

Each student will design their own project (within limits of the class) model it in wax, build a refractory mold, make color and texture samples, pack the mold with their choice of colors based on the samples, and fire the project.

The class will cover:
• Designing for pate de verre; low relief, high relief
• Effects of particle size and temperature on glass. Students will make samples to illustrate this.
• Techniques, tips and tricks for working with wax to create original models for casting.
• Various refractory mold materials options.
• Mold making techniques; poured/block molds, shell molds, multiple part molds for pate de verre. The mysteries of sprues, vents, reservoirs, and crucibles explained.
• Glass options for pate de verre: frits and powders, reactive glasses. Mixing colors. Making and managing color samples.
• Packing the molds: tools, techniques, binders.
• Kiln theory and setup and firing schedules
• Finishing / coldworking options
Students will make 1 project and several samples.

This course will introduce those with a working knowledge of glass fusing and forming to a more advanced methodology of flat casting using a 3D effect to display texture, imagery and pattern in, on and through their kiln glass projects.

Students will learn a variety of techniques including xerography, stenciling, painting using vitreous enamels, and dry powdered glass. Also, we will be using computer generated designs, photographs and text to enhance these design elements.  This process involves producing a library of designs that can be later used in construction of a finished piece.

Class Info pdf: Ins & Outs of Model & Mold Making for Kilnformed Glass

During this workshop students will concentrate on model making skills and mold making. For the model making we will work in clay and wax although the main focus will be wax. Students will make several models for different types of molds. The mold making portion of the workshop will cover reproduction molds and casting molds. The reproduction molds will cover latex, silicon, RTV rubber and plaster. The casting molds will cover open face, press, closed and multi-part. No glass will be cast in this workshop but students will take home the models, reproduction molds and casting molds that they make in the workshop. It is recommended that students bring small objects that they want to make reproduction molds of and also have ideas for pieces they want to make models of.

This class will explore color principles, theory and applications using Bullseye glass and kilnforming techniques.  The intent is to increase our understanding of color and how we can use it in our glass work to enhance the content and increase the beauty of the finished piece.

Conventional color theory, which is generally based on opaque or pigmented color, provides the departure point for our explorations in glass.  Glass obviously has many qualities that are much different than opaque or pigmented color so our goal is to understand color in terms of the qualities of glass such as transparency, translucency, light reflection and
refraction, and depth.
