The glass paperweight is the first step for anyone interested in working with hot glass. This introductory class guides the first time glass artist through the most crucial skills. First you will gather glass from the furnace, learn to shape and control, and how to apply color to the glass. In a fun and informative manner our instructors will introduce you to tools, safety and basic glass theory. Every student will leave with a gorgeous paperweight and a strong foundation for future exploration. No experience necessary. All materials included.

Class Info pdf: Illuminating Glass: Vitreous Enamels on Pate de Verre

This class is designed to introduce students with some working knowledge of hollow frit casting (pate de verre) and adding vitreous enamels to the glass surface.  This class will involve mold-making, lots of cold work, as well as painting and drawing. Students do not need to be accom-plished drafts people, but familiarity with clay modeling and mold-making will be helpful.   Demonstrations and slide presentations will supplement workshop information.

Drawing will initiate the creative process.  Students will learn how to draw and paint with low fire Reusche vitreous enamels by adding their designs or imagery to simple two or three dimensional pate de verre forms.  These forms and/or vessels will be created using thin-walled pate de verre techniques.

Students will develop a working knowledge of enamels experimenting on sheet glass, first, and then apply that knowledge to a cast form.  Through multiple firings, individuals will experience the addition of color and detail through multiple firings.  Mold making techniques will be demonstrated, firing schedules discussed and hand-outs provided. Students will work with clay to make forms for mold-making.

Workshop Details pdf: Drop-Out Vessels & Finishing Techniques

Amanda Simmons is well known for her beautiful kilnformed and cameo-engraved glass vessels. This 5 day workshop will include and expand on techniques from our 3 day workshop.  The class will focus on the subtleties and variables of slumping kilnformed vessels and the many coldworking processes to finish the form.

We will work with pre-fired small blanks on the first day so that students will be able to start a slump on the first day to watch the process, test out the various kilns and to have a sample piece for the initial coldworking session.  Working with color in forming the vessels and designing pieces for using engraving techniques will also be covered.  After Amanda explains and demonstrates the different processes that she has worked with, students will then create a range of small to medium blanks and cameo engraving sample tiles.  Experimentation in form and color will be encouraged throughout the course.  You will finish this class with several vessels and coldworked sample tiles made using the techniques learned on the class.

As toddlers, we were fearless mark makers. We knew nothing about self-consciousness and expectations… As adults, we tend to forget that the simplest of marks, when done with intelligence and commitment, become something powerful. This course empowers the timid (but optimistic) among us to draw using our native talent and life experience. Charcoal, ink and pencil sketches lead to exercises that explore a range of materials for drawing with and on glass, including powders, frit, stringers, enamels, Glassline and more.

The focus of this powerful course is toward developing and refining a skilled, intuitive and uniquely individual approach to mark making using sheet glass and powders. Simple black and white single layer studies encourage increasingly individual work and culminate in independent multi-layered monochromatic and color projects. Participants naturally expand their kiln-forming skills while acquiring a greater understanding of material, composition, line, spatial perspective, layering strategies and use of color. Experimentation with materials and strategies for invention will be encouraged and the creative process of moving from idea to concept sketches toward final resolution will be stressed.

This class will expand on some of the processes introduced in the “Glass Onion”. While this class is a natural follow-on to its predecessor, it is power-packed on its own and has no prerequisite.

Students will be introduced to expressive and painterly kiln forming techniques using an

extensive palette of frit and powder to enable glass designs with brilliant color, rich surfaces and depth. Working with Bullseye glass, frit, powder, and multiple-firing processes, students will create pre-fired design elements to be used in subsequent glass projects, combined with other glass techniques and/or adapted to other media. Topics to be covered may include:

• realism and abstraction  • shading and contrast  • depth and layering strategies  • surface and relief texture

Students will combine these kiln forming processes in a final project.

Creating imagery and landscapes in fused glass is accomplished by developing a set of techniques which produces painterly effects on the surface or within the glass body.   Using different glass elements (glass powders, frits, stringers, enamels, and various unconventional tools) allows you to create shading, texture, and other design elements that become encapsulated within and on the surface of the piece. It is a celebration of the transparency, color and vibrancy that only glass as a medium can capture.

The glass plays with the light, changes the color of it and reflects it in many different ways within one single piece. The onlooker sees the glass object in a different way every time it is viewed. It is exciting and challenging to create a piece using this method. In this class we will focus mainly on landscape design.

We will be building a palette of techniques that allows a wide range of painterly effects through specific in-class exercises, and then apply it to small studies, and larger compositions.  The final project with be a thick layered landscape design.  Time permitting, you will also be given a chance to work on and fire your work more than once.

Workshop Details pdf:  Sand Casting Through The Opening – Karl

This two-day course will introduce you to the potential of molten glass as a wonderful creative material through the process of “Hot” casting, using a crucible kiln, into especially prepared sand moulds. You will have the opportunity to ladle glass straight from the furnace and pour right into prepared “open faced” sand moulds using found and sculpted objects. This is the most direct method to create your own solid sculptural forms in glass.  Placement of  glass colors and inclusions on the surface of the pressed sand molds will also be explored.  Students will also get a chance explore the technique of sand cast glass in a fusing kiln environment.  The techniques covered will allow the students to make unique solid sand cast objects.  We will also be pulling out our late 1800’s side-arm glass press to experiment with some of the cast metal press molds that we have in our studio, if time allows.

No previous glass working experience required and all materials are provided. Feel free to bring in your own small, solid objects to press into the sand. Appropriate footwear is a must, leather boots preferred. No open toed shoes or sandals please.
