The sintered method of pâté de verré uses frit and powders to make objects that become solid just below the fusing temperature to make forms that have a sugar crystal look. Students will learn through projects, handouts, discussions and reviewing works in this media. Through custom color choices of color can be expanded. Impress, sprig and hump molds will be covered.

This class will investigate fundamental principles of design that are common to all forms of art, design, architecture and craft, focusing on primary elements of two and three dimensional design, principles for ordering these elements, and transformation of the elements into a rich composition.

Students make a range of two-dimensional and heavy relief projects and leave with a solid footing in the concepts that will propel their work to the next level. These include systems of ordering and relationships (symmetry and asymmetry, hierarchy, rhythm and repetition, transformation, proportion and scale). Design principles will be explored through presentations and discussions, drawing and painting exercises, sketch models and in kiln formed glass, relying primarily on a black and white palette. The emphasis will be on applying these design elements and principles to your kiln formed glass work. The intent is to understand the essential elements of design, how they can be manipulated, and their role in developing and enriching the artistic content in finished works.

Class Info pdf: Coming soon

Much of Gabriele Kustner’s work involves the creation of intricate pieces of glass cane which are painted with China paint on the outside. The paint is “fired” on the cane and cut into many pieces with a diamond saw. These pieces are laid out and melted on to a flat sheet and the round pieces develop a “honeycomb” pattern. When you stack the pieces there are always gaps between them and when the glass gets soft it runs in to these gaps. Her “woven” pattern is a cross section of the “honeycomb” pattern. After the glass has cooled, the sheet is ground smooth and is laid out on a metal mold and placed back in to the oven. Finally the piece is ground at a grinding lathe with aluminum oxide or natural sandstone wheels to obtain the textured surface.

In this class students will learn each step in the process through a “hands on approach”. We will make small objects in wax that will be used to follow through each step in the process from mold making, through kiln firing and annealing. The concept for this class is to cover all aspects of glass casting so that the participants will be able to continue working on their own. I am excited to offer this class and share what I have found to be an interesting way to create cast glass objects. I would encourage people who are interested in finding a new way to approach glass casting to consider taking this class. No previous glass casting experience is required.

I have spent several years developing a technique to create forms in wax using wet clay as a mold. Images are made by pressing objects into the clay and then pouring the melted wax into the void. I believe this technique as a lot of potential to produce interesting forms and textures for pieces that can be cast in glass.

This course will guide you through the steps necessary to form a strong foundation of understanding of the elusive process of pate de verre. The time-tested methods used to create pate de verre allow for complex details, delicately modeled surfaces, and precise color placement. The finished object displays a translucent glow unique to the technique.

In this six-day workshop Marc and Ellen will show you how to make both open face molds and press molds. They will demonstrate and guide you through the model making processes of both clay and wax working techniques. They will demonstrate the “ins and outs” of reproduction molds as well as face coats and hand built molds. On the technical side, they will cover methods for estimating the amount of glass needed to properly fill a mold as well as their own techniques for using frits and powders to create the look you envision. Coldworking techniques of the finished pieces will also be covered.

Students will make a tile using an open face mold and a small cup using a two-part press mold.

This seven-day workshop is for experienced kiln workers who wish to explore and develop an individual approach to design and making. It will challenge participants to step out of the predictable and re-look at the potential of kilnformed glass and their way of working. Although this class will cover a range of practical techniques, the primary emphasis will be on exploring the process of developing ideas and making, not on finished products. Utilizing creative exercises, drawing, model making, and the techniques of kilnforming and cold working, students will experiment, combine processes, and prepare tests and prototypes that may serve as starting points for further development. Hands-on workshop time will be complimented by individual attention, group discussions, a field trip and presentations on historical and contemporary glass, and each student will be asked to share their knowledge, ideas and experience by participating in an individual 15- minute presentation.

This 6-day intensive explores the making of kiln-formed murrine and its use, in combination with crushed glass, to create kiln-cast objects. The selective placement of certain types of frit, as in traditional pate de verre processes, can offer the caster more color and patterning control within a casting. For this course, murrine/cane slices will be fabricated and incorporated as a type of specialized frit.

Students will learn to construct shaped and patterned cane from sheet, rod and frit via several techniques. From the resulting cast murrine, participants will have the opportunity to create one or two small cast forms by selectively orienting and fuse-casting the cane pieces into a larger form.

The class will focus on formal kiln-casting concerns and procedures relative to using cane for special cast effects.

Pate de verre is a widely varied art form. In this class you will learn how to make open-faced molds to create thin walled glass forms. Using frit and powder you will learn several different methods of exact color placement. We will also cover the use of reinvestments (inclusions) in the mold. We will have in class discussions covering firing schedules and the use of temperature to attain specific goals.

By the end of this class you should feel confident in pouring a mold, packing it with glass, and firing it on your own. Pate de verre is a process which encourages patience but also lends it’s self to experimentation and unusual expression. Expect to work hard and have fun.

In this class we will start with the fundamentals and proceed to the more advanced methods of coldworking and finishing glass. Our emphasis will be on gaining confidence, comfort, and competence on each of the machines — the lap wheel, the belt sander, the lathe, the sandblaster, the saw, and the hand engraver — as well as learning the variety of finishes and possibilities that an be achieved with these tools.

We will use our time to develop coldworking strategies and learn how to use the coldshop tools efficiently and to their utmost capacity. We will also look at methods to achieve one’s own desired results in the least amount of time with the smallest amount of effort.
